The
Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery Centre, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi
conducts several training programs focusing on basic introductory courses to advanced
training modules. These programs aim to help surgeons acquire skills for laparoscopic
surgery by training on endo-trainer and simulators in order to familiarize students
with the art of operating under 2D videoscopic guidance. It teaches surgeons how
to manipulate instruments without injuring structures and to appreciate operating
without depth perception. This helps in developing enhanced hand-to-eye coordination
in the unstressed environment. These
training programs include series of seminars, clinical assessments and case discussions
on basic instrumentation, their use and maintenance, intricacies of surgical procedures,
complications and their prevention, monthly audit of all the cases performed in
the previous month, to check on case assessment, instrument assessment, procedural
difficulties, complications and to discuss ways of improving patient care.
The department
has an exhaustive video / CDs library (edited / unedited) of basic and advanced
laparoscopic surgical procedures recorded in digital system. These are utilized
for training candidates through video discussions on previously operated patients,
critical evaluation of procedures and also serve as future references of techniques
used in handling difficult and unexpected situations. The
training programs also include active involvement in the operation theatre, initially
through observation of operations performed by proficient surgeons and later by
assisting surgery in a graduated manner. Exposure
to medline for latest development in the field of minimal access surgery, basic
reading material on general and some specific procedures from text books in the
library, study of overview of minimal access surgery techniques as well as selected
papers from the latest journals are made available to those undergoing training.
The Department
of MAS also encourages and helps trainees to visit various super-specialized departments
in the hospital viz. Department of Gastroenterology, Department of GE Surgery,
Department of Imaging for CT Scan and MRI, Department of Ultrasonology etc.

| Laparoscopic
Cholecystectomy is the gold standard for treating gallstones. The procedure is
being included in the teaching curriculum of surgical postgraduates. Although
accepted initially without randomized controlled trials, sufficient research is
now available of its safety and feasibility as the treatment for gall bladder
disease.
Our aim is to provide a sound training, knowledge of
endoanatomy, practice of safe dissection and familiarity with trouble shooting
for performing a safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy. An introduction to laparoscopic
suturing techniques would be an integral part of the course and would include
endotraining. [Download
