Recovery from COVID-19 is posing a new set of challenges for patients and medical doctors alike. This cunning and baffling virus has affected the whole world. The virus is still haunting and scientists, drugmakers running the race against the time to develop a safe vaccine and specific treatment for COVID-19.
Current data reveals that the coronavirus can affect many different systems within the body and is not only restricted to the lungs. The virus can also damage the heart, kidneys, liver, and increases the risk of long-term health problems. COVID-19 can also make blood cells to form clots, as well as weaken blood vessels. A new study by Harvard Medical School investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital has shown patients with severe COVID-19 infections have high levels of the blood-clotting protein and are at elevated risk for serious injury from blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
Recovery from the virus has been a lonely experience for patients which has led to a sharp increase in posttraumatic stress disorders. A recent study has proposed that ‘long COVID-19’ is a condition, and even people who recover from the disease may show symptoms of COVID-19, even months after recovery. These symptoms include fatigue, breathlessness, psychological distress, and a general decline in quality of life.
The emerging evidence suggests patients with mild disease may get better with time and may not face any long-term health issues. However, the recovery time for people who faced serious complications of COVID-19, such as respiratory distress or delirium, is higher.
A holistic approach is the need of an hour for follow up care and well-being of all post-COVID recovering patients. The ideology is to continue the momentum in life by following proper guidelines- social distancing, hand hygiene, and wearing proper face masks. It is also important to be in a positive state of mind and keep a high immunity level. Keep urself motivated as recovery rate of this illness is high and everyone has a fair chance to defeat the infection. The initiatives have been taken to have separate post COVID care centers in the country to manage the recovery of COVID patients. A national consensus on treatment protocols and more public health awareness will help in the future to defeat COVID-19.
